Before I go about and give my opinion of why the RMAH is good for Diablo 3, I would like to dispel some misconceptions because I saw a lot of them in the comments of this post. First, the Diablo 3 Real Money Auction House is not gambling. South Korea just used the term to justify their conclusion. Using the Real Money Auction House isn’t even gambling unless you deposit your own money into the game, or you make enough to lose it. But, the thing that it has in common with gambling is that you can choose not to use it. If you don’t like it, don’t let it ruin your whole gaming experience, just simply don’t use it. But, I do encourage you to use it to your advantage because it has many benefits to offer you. Also, Tobold seemed to think that Diablo 3 auction house regarding virtual property may face legal action. This could happen eventually, but the Diablo 3 kind of Real Money Auction House is still really in its infancy and isn’t worth going after for taxes (at the moment).
When I first went about and trying to create this argument, I had to sit down and think to myself: what would be good for Diablo 3? After thinking, I came up with this list.
-If players enjoy playing the game
-If Blizzard puts more effort into improving the game
It’s not very long, but this list encompasses lots of things, which I think that the real money auction house can add to Diablo 3.
The first positive thing that will come of the real money auction house is increased revenue for Blizzard. This could mean the same ol same ol, but it also has potential to mean more patch updates as well. Blizzard has had a history of caring for their players and giving them their best. This is why Blizzard is such a successful company and this is why I think that they will use at least some of this extra cash flow to have more updates and changes which will benefit the game in the future.
Next, the RMAH will also have positive effects on the players. If you want to use the RMAH, you have the potential to make some money by selling in-game items for real money, which will hopefully make you happy. Also, you can just invest the real money that you make back into Diablo 3 to purchase items that you might normally not be able to buy with gold. In addition, because you have the ability to buy with real money and gold, you can find better deals depending on which medium you are using. If you use this to your advantage, you will be able to buy things much cheaper. (Note that this strategy requires no money being pumped into the game)
I look at the RMAH like this. It is a new addition to the Diablo 3 universe and it looks like Blizzard isn’t going to get rid of it. You can either ignore it totally, which is okay, or you can try to use it to your advantage and have it add to your gaming experience. At murphiskgoldguide my main goal is to give everyone strategies to help them use the RMAH to their advantage to enhance their play experience and make some money in the process. If this interests you, please don’t hesitate to look at more posts on my blog.
I agree with this. It’s ridiculous to call the RMAH gambling. If that’s gambling, then so is auctioning stuff on eBay. You are not putting down your own money in the off chance of winning something. If you play for X hours you will have an income of $Y/hour. Whether Y is $1 or $10 or $100 it doesn’t matter. You only pay for the game once but then you can generate revenue from it forever. I only wish real gambling were like that.
Besides, no one is forced to participate in the RMAH.
So no, not gambling. Those who claim otherwise probably don’t know what gambling means.
